WSSV DNA Vaccine for Shrimp FGB Division, CIFE, Mumbai

figure 1.
  • A WSSV DNA vaccine has been designed that checks the progression of this virus in cultured shrimp through RNA interference. The plasmid construct expresses long hairpin RNA against vp28, a crucial viral envelop protein gene. When administered by dip treatment or injection, the vaccine provides 75% survival in lab challenge studies compared to complete mortality of unvaccinated control group. Using freshwater prawn, Macrobrachium rosenbergii as a model organism it has also been shown that when immature and mature females (eggs-on-head) and mature males are injected with the vaccine, it passes on to the offspring. Pharmacokinetics and other studies are being carried out on the molecule as per regulatory requirements in PPP mode.
