Fish Farmers day

ICAR-Central Institute of Fisheries Education, Mumbai celebrated “National Fish Farmers’ day” on 10th JULY, 2017

ICAR-Central Institute of Fisheries Education celebrated the National Fish Farmers' Day at Mumbai Shri Gurucharan Singh, Director of Fisheries, Himachal Pradesh, was the Chief Guest on the occasion while Dr. Gopal Krishna, Director & Vice-Chancellor, ICAR-CIFE presided over the function.

Around 100 fish farmers, fishers, entrepreneurs, representatives of NGOs and Cooperative Societies from different parts of Maharashtra, Jharkhand and Bihar attended the function. Outstanding work and success stories of farmers/fisher-social-workers were recognised and awarded. The awardees shared their valuable experiences and their business models with everyone.

Shri. Gurucharan Singh, in his address as Chief Guest, emphasized the Prime Minister’s vision of doubling farmers’ income by 2022. Reiterating the pivotal role of ICAR institutions and Fisheries Departments in this endeavour, he articulated the long felt need of farmers to treat aquaculture at par with agriculture in order to give a greater fillip to fisheries development in the country.

Dr. Gopal Krishna, Director, ICAR-CIFE accentuated on the increase in production, value addition and increase in the income of farmers. He also stressed upon the forward and backward linkages as a better source of opportunities for the stakeholders.

A series of interactive lecture-discussions on tilapia farming, Vannamei farming, disease management in fish and shrimp farming, and ornamental fish culture were held by CIFE faculty for the benefit of farmers.

Fishers and fish farmers viz Mr. Arjun Gadre, Mr. Patwardhan Lavesh, Mr. Rakesh Sawant and Mr. Narayan Gokchi shared their experiences.

The Fish Farmers Day program was coordinated by Dr. S. N. Ojha, HoD, Dr. Arpita Sharnam Principal Scientist, and other faculty and students of FEES Division, CIFE, Mumbai.
