ICAR-CIFE, Mumbai celebrated XIII Convocation : 3 March 2017

  • ICAR-Central Institute of Fisheries Education (CIFE), Mumbai, the premier organization in the country involved in human resources development in the field of fisheries and aquaculture, celebrated its XIII convocation on 3rd March, 2017. Dr. Trilochan Mohapatra, Secretary, Department of Agricultural Research & Education (DARE), Govt. of India and Director-General, Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) was the Chief Guest of the function. Shri Mahadev Jagannath Jankar, Minister of Animal Husbandry, Dairy Development and Fisheries Development, Govt. of Maharashtra, Mumbai; Shri Gajanan Kirtikar, Member of Parliament, North-West, Goregaon, Mumbai, Dr. J.K. Jena, DDG (Fisheries), ICAR and Dr. Bharti Lavekar, MLA, Versova, Mumbai, Maharashtra Assembly were the Guests of Honour. Dr. Gopal Krishna, Director and Vice Chancellor, CIFE, in his welcome address, highlighted the salient academic and research achievements of the institute. He also underlined the research and thrust areas and the achievements in the flagship programmes taken up and new academic initiatives taken by the institute. Dr. Lavekar hinted about the need for Blue Revolution and also about exploring the possibility of starting Bachelors of Fisheries Science Course at the institute which will benefit the students from fishermen community of Versova. Shri. Kirtikar stressed that Certificate course on Skill Development Programme on fisheries for the fishermen of Maharashtra should be started at the institute. Dr. J.K. Jena, DDG (Fisheries), ICAR emphasized the importance of fisheries for food and nutritional security and underlined the role of young graduates to achieve this goal. The Chief Guest Dr. Mohapatra urged the students to work towards the goal of bringing in blue revolution in the country and to double the farmers’ income. He also stressed upon the need for entrepreneurship development to make the graduates as ‘job providers’ rather than ‘job seekers’. He also reiterated the Government’s commitment to achieve ‘Blue revolution’ and other initiatives and to increase farmers’ income. During the convocation, 151 M.F.Sc. and 54 Ph.D. degrees were awarded, besides presenting 29 Gold Medal Awards to meritorious students. Ms. Sampa Pal and Mr. Shyam, K.U. secured the top ranks for the years 2013-15 and 2014-16, respectively. .
