Fisheries and aquaculture will play a key role in ensuring food security, nutrition and employment in the face of increasing population and the consequent increase in demand for food fish. The contribution of fisheries sector in accomplishing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) has been well recognised. The growing fisheries sector critically requires specialised, quality human resources to drive the research and development necessary to ensure a sustainable development.
The global fisheries research and education have responded to the increasing demand for diversity and wide-range of specialisations. ICAR-Central Institute of Fisheries Education also underwent significant transformation from a training institute to a Centre of Excellence producing specialized human resources, besides engaging in basic, strategic and applied research and providing policy support to fisheries development. Nevertheless, it is essential to continually evaluate and align our academic and research programmes in light of the present and perceived impact and relevance to the sector and the society at large.
Further, continuous assessment of the skill-requirement of the sector is essential to formulate a strategy for designing comprehensive fisheries education and training programmes. Capacity building of the faculty in niche areas is a priority to accomplish these goals. It is also essential for us to engage all the stakeholders to remain globally competitive and locally relevant, besides being stakeholder-compliant and viable. Apart from these core competencies, human resources to engage in developmental and regulatory processes and having entrepreneurship capability are also important. It is also extremely significant to adapt and evolve to the changing needs and, for this, human resources with deeper insights into the national and international policies and institutional mechanisms, in addition to the core capabilities, are imperative.
In this context, it is indeed a great privilege for me to be a part of the flagship Fisheries institution of ICAR with over six decades of glorious services to the nation in the field of human resources development. In our journey towards realizing the vision of becoming a premier centre of excellence in the global fisheries map, I earnestly look forward for the support of all the stakeholders and well-wishers. Let us dedicate ourselves to take our organisation to newer heights and contribute to the sustainable growth and development of the fisheries sector.
