Mandate

In accordance with the changing needs of the country, the sector and the growing stature of CIFE, her mandate was revised from time to time. The present mandate which was revised in 1998 reads as follows:

To conduct Masters and Doctoral programmes in various disciplines of fisheries science and technology
To establish centres of excellence in emerging areas of fisheries science

To conduct refresher training programmes for fisheries developmental and extension personnel

To conduct basic and inter-disciplinary research in fisheries
To conduct need-based capsule/vocational training on various technologies related to fisheries and allied disciplines
To provide institutional support for consultancy and participation in sponsored projects and programmes with other institutions, agencies and industries
In view of the Vision 2025 perspective, CIFE envisages to revise its mandate as:

To conduct post graduate degree programmes in core and emerging disciplines of fisheries science
To conduct basic and strategic research in frontier areas of fisheries

To conduct demand-driven training and educational programmes for different stake holders in fisheries sector

To provide technical support, policy development support and consultancy services
CIFE centres would work within this overall Mandate. The specific objectives for each of the Centres are envisaged as below:
Kolkata Centre
  • To conduct one year post-graduate diploma in inland fisheries for fisheries developmental and extension personnel

  • To conduct need-based training and research programmes for Eastern and North Eastern States

  • To offer consultancy and advisory services in relevant areas of fisheries
Kakinada Centre
  • To conduct need-based training programmes for fisheries developmental and extension personnel and entrepreneurs

  • To provide hands-on training to students and entrepreneurs

  • To organise field demonstrations, transfer of technology programmes and advisory services on proven aquaculture technologies
  • To conduct need based applied research in low cost aquaculture
Rohtak Centre
  • To conduct research to develop aquaculture suitable for salt-affected areas

  • To provide demand driven training, extension and consultancy support to State fisheries departments, NGO's, fish farmers and entrepreneurs in field tested technologies
Powarkheda Centre
  • To conduct demand driven training and research programmes on freshwater aquaculture for Central region

  • To provide hands-on training to students and entrepreneurs
